In the 1950s, Tolai were not allowed to drink alcohol (Tawa meaning water, LongLong meaning mad). At a Matupit fundraiser at Kikila, the police came to break up the illegal drinking that was going on and a fight ensued. The Matupit people took a stand, saying this is a double standard, because the expats all consume vast amounts of alcohol at the New Guinea Club and other establishments. This was part of the post war rise up that led to the formation of the Mataungan Association and subsequent independence.
What if Australia had given the proper respect to the depth of Tolai culture and intellect much earlier in the century?
